茫茫西部，一個路經農場的過客肖恩（Alan Ladd 飾）引起了主人斯塔雷特一家的警覺。原來當地惡徒雷克一夥為了吞併自耕農的土地，不停騷擾斯塔雷特等居民，男主人喬·斯塔雷特弄清了肖恩的身份後，將美麗的妻子瑪利亞和兒子喬伊介紹給對方，並邀請肖恩留在自己的農場幫忙。肖恩入住小鎮不久，就在鎮上的酒館遭到了雷克一夥的折辱，自耕農們不願放棄辛勞工作換來的家園，集合商討對付雷克的辦法，最終卻只能旁觀肖恩肉搏雷克的眾打手。肖恩在農場辛勤工作，並不時傳授給喬伊戰鬥的方法，另一方面，雷克仍然不放棄趕走斯塔雷特等人...
